When my mind is at peace
And my body at ease
And I have you with me
All the sorrows of samsara
Wash away like sands
In a mandala.
Chorus:
Just for today
You and I get
To be together.
Don't go, don't go yet,
Stay until the break of dawn.
Disillusioned by samsara
I went to the mountains for nirvana,
But in the high wilderness
There was nothing but emptiness.
Only in the bottom of samsara
I found nirvana.
Chorus #####
Maybe death is followed by rebirth,
But frankly, I couldn’t care less.
To suffer with you on this earth
The sorrows of just one lifetime,
I would part with the happiness
Of a thousand lifetimes.
Chorus #####
ང་གཉིས་དང་པོ་ཐུག་དུས། ཆར་བ་སིབ་སིབ་གཅིག་བཏང་གི།

A fine rain was falling when we met that day
And there was a crowd outside Tsuklakhang
Where you and your grandma had come to pray.
You held a small umbrella that shielded only her,
One of your sleeves was drenched in the shower.
The house of gods was filled with smoke and grease.
I stood before the Jowo, but my eyes followed your grace.
As the warmth of the butter lamps dried your blouse,
And the light of a thousand flames brightened your face,
The shadow of a thousand desires darkened my soul.
You closed your eyes and bowed to Jowo Rinpoche.
Shall I guess what you were praying for?
As grandma held you close and cried once more,
The holy land of India appeared in her tears
And your sleeves were soaked once again.

We are not meant to be,
The stars didn’t align for us.
It’s neither you nor me,
No one is to blame.
Once upon a time,
When I was young and you were too,
And all the boys fell for you,
I could hardly look at your face,
Let alone talk to you.
I'm a bird in the sky,
You’re a fish in the sea.
If the blue air is too light for you,
The green water is too heavy for me.
Once upon a time,
When I was young and you were free,
Nothing was sweeter than your words,
Nothing softer than your skin,
And nothing could come between you and me.
But now the seasons turn
And leaves bury the street,
The winter storm rises and
There’s nowhere to retreat.
Once upon a time,
When you and I were not yet old,
When your leaves were green
And your heart was made of gold,
You were the sun and I circled you like the world.
You travel from west to east,
And I from east to west.
I guess it isn’t hard to see
That we are not meant to be.

I’ve been to the realm of men,
I’ve seen the realm of gods,
And if there’s a realm called hell
You can bet I know it well.
Yes, you were wounded first
Early on in our strange war,
But remember I am the one
Who ended up with the final scar.
For you and me life has been
Like a movie playing on a screen.
Who wrote this screenplay?
The way our stories unravel
As if we were inside a novel,
Who wrote this story?
Burned by the sun,
Soaked in the rain,
The smallest of scars
Can hurt again and again.
I’ve seen the physicians,
I’ve tried their medicines,
But oh, there’s no cure
For the broken soul.
Many years from now
If we meet again somehow
Will I recognize you?
If we hold hands someday
When our hair turns gray
Can we make it true?
I tried to ease my sorrow,
And negotiate a kind of peace.
I said I’d meet tomorrow
Others just like you.
I searched throughout the land
I sailed the foreign seas
And I finally understand
There is no one like you.
Many years from now
If we meet again somehow
Will I recognize you?
If we hold hands someday
When our hair turns gray
Can we make it true?

April has arrived out here,
But winter's wounds still endure
And the sun can’t warm the icy air.
Why roam through the windy streets
As if hounded by demons and beasts!
For once, let’s just stay indoors.
Let's open that bottle of Jameson.
Our good old friends are all here now
And the same old topics come up somehow.
But wait, Sonam Wangdue is out of sight,
He’s chasing the same old girl tonight,
Boy, he’ll never get it right.
Tenzin Wangdu has graduated from college,
He’s looking for a job in the market,
With his diploma hanging from his neck.
But Lobsang Choephel, who went his own way,
And drove a yellow cab from the very first day,
Has bought a big new house in Sunnyside!
Oh who cares about all this gossip!
Let's play a song everyone can sing!
Come on, Choeying, tune the strings.
Tashi Dolma went and got married,
She’s now the mother of three.
Oh what a fine figure she used to be!
She acts shy when we’re face to face,
Our clumsy words stumble all over the place,
For we’ve drifted apart since our school days.
Remember how we studied for class XII exams,
With ascetic concentration for three months?
I missed the grade by three points,
Had no choice but to join the military
And fight for someone else's country.
We won the war but lost our land.
Oh who cares about these old stories!
Let's play a song everyone can sing!
Come on, Chungpo, let’s hear the drums.
Tenzin Wangyal has won the asylum case,
So Tentsetan is finally getting his papers,
Tomorrow we’ll have a party again.
Tenzing Rigdol is already stoned,
And our dear monk is also gone,
And lost himself in the realm of happiness.
Oh who cares about all this gossip!
Let's play a song everyone can sing!
Come on, Choeying, tune the strings.

This isn’t our first meeting, to be sure,
We were introduced sometime before.
You told me your name but I forget,
Was it Tenzin, or Tsering... it’s Tenzin, I bet.
The handsome guy who walked you in,
A friend of yours? Oh, he’s your cousin!
Well, I’ve heard a few things about you
But let me see if they’re true.
By what name is your father known?
In what town was your mother born?
And when exactly was it in the nineties
That you first came into exile?
What classes are you taking these days?
Where do you go to school anyways?
You know, I’ve never met anyone so shy,
Six questions and just one reply!
Even the statues in the temple try
To answer my question with a little smile.
We aren’t meeting for the first time tonight
So we don’t have to be all nice and polite.
I’ve heard a few things about you
And I can’t tell if they’re true.
From the lines in your smile, I can divine
That you’ve lived more than a few lives.
But it seems from the way you hold your wine,
That you haven’t acquired a taste for life.
To live a life without combat,
Is there anything more tragic than that?

Don't rush, stay a while
There's no one at your tail,
Here, have another glass of wine
The rain hasn't stopped its wail.
Don't rush, stay a while
There's no one at your tail,
If the hour gets late,
The trains will still wait.
"The streets are rough nowadays,"
That's what everyone says
And there’s room here
If you wanna stay.
You keep your life’s history
Locked away in an iron chest
But a few pieces of the mystery
Have escaped from their nest.
On March 23rd, two thousand and seven
Where were you running to, all by yourself?
On the Manhattan Bridge as the night split even,
Who made you cry till the river flooded over?
"The streets are rough nowadays,"
That's what everyone says
And there’s room here
If you wanna stay.
If we had been introduced
When we weren't so confused,
We could have had a future
Instead of just a past.
On March 23rd, two thousand and seven
Where were you running to, all by yourself?
On the Manhattan Bridge as the night split even,
Who made you cry like the clouds had burst open?
"The streets are rough nowadays,"
That's what everyone says
And there’s room here
If you wanna stay.
Don't rush, stay awhile… stay awhile…

We all revolve in an orbit of suffering
The way out is shrouded in mist
Our beloved father left to seek our living
Many years later he is still missed
My family is scattered to the four winds and eight corners
Oh the burden of fate will not be erased
The sky is blue, the blue of turquoise
It falls and breaks into a thousand pieces
The Yamdrok lake has frosted to ice
Through my tent an iron wind pierces
I try to make a fire but there’s no more firewood
Oh how cold this place feels
Our deities are imprisoned in golden garments
A thousand years of civilization is defeated in a race
Mount Meru is smashed into a hundred fragments
The blessings beneath the mount taken to an unseen place
Our yaks and sheep disappear day by day
Oh what a price to pay
My effort to find some peace of mind
Is in vain for my body is in flames
If this earth is a needle of samsara
The mountain where I live is the tip of that needle
If this nomad story of ours were to end here
Oh the burden of fate will not be erased

This album is the work of many people. These eight songs (or stories) were written over ten years, but the journey began long ago in Patlikuhl, India. My parents were my first teachers: my mother taught me how to tell stories, and my father taught me how to write them. Along the way, friends gave me their bootlegged tapes and introduced me to the American (and Canadian) songwriting tradition. Thank you Tenzin Wangyal, Han Shan, Tsering Choden, Lhadon Tethong, Kate Woznow, Mel Raoul, Lilian Tse, Diana Drucker, Matt Zaccarino, Dhondup Phunkhang, Bhuchung D. Sonam. My songs became real when Kesang Marstrand decided to record them.
I am indebted to my friends who always sing along with me: Lobsang Choephel, Tenzin Choeying, Khyentse Chokey, Sonam Wangdue, Tenzin Dhesal, Diki Dolkar, Tenzin Tsetan Choklay, Chungpo Tsering, Kushal, Gyatso Chuteng, Tenzing Rigdol, Rekjong Dhondup Tashi, Tenzin Choenyi, Dickie and Choden, Dorjee Tseten, Nick Gulotta, Lobsang Tseten, Kunchok Dorjee, Ngawang Jorden, Tsepa Bayul, Ugen Badhaytsang, Thupten Tsering, Jampa Samdo, Tenzin Wangchuk, Tenzin Tsundue, Karma Tenzin, Anto, Jyotsna, Gelek Pasang, Sontse, Tselha, Jigdal, Tensonam, B2, Tenkyi, Jigme, Kelsang Rinchen, Karma Tseten, Tenchoe, Dolkar la, Thupten la, Pasang Yangkyi la, Barshee la, Sangmo, Khetsun and Thoesam. I thank Alex Vittum and Bianca Bockman for recording my first album Logchopa, and Rinzin Wangyal for letting me experiment in his basement studio.
To the legendary Tibetan songwriters of the past, Milarepa and Tsangyang Gyatso, I submit my apologies for this meager offering. To the icons of contemporary Tibetan music, I offer my thanks for the inspiration: Rangzen Shonu, Tawu Lobsang Palden, Ajo Tom, JJI Exile Brothers, Jampa Tsering, Techung, Tenzin Choegyal. Finally, this album would not be made without the love and commitment of Tsering Choden and Tenzin Dickie, my first listeners and final supervisors, whose unwavering support makes everything possible.
